Wildwood

Nestled in northern Sumter County, Wildwood occupies a strategic spot approximately 50 miles northwest of Orlando and 75 miles north of Tampa. Earning its nickname as the “Crossroads of Florida” thanks to its access to I-75, the Turnpike, State Road 44, and US 301. Once a quiet, rural railroad hub, Wildwood has transformed into one of the country’s most rapidly expanding small towns. This boom is closely tied to its neighboring relationship with The Villages, a sprawling and growing retirement community. While Wildwood remains its own city, with a distinct identity, it benefits from the amenities and economic vitality spurred by The Villages. Despite its growth, Wildwood retains a small-town charm and tight-knit feel, with friendly neighborhoods, historic landmarks like the circa-1890 Baker House, and a downtown sprinkled with cozy shops, eateries, and antique finds.

For outdoor enthusiasts, Wildwood boasts abundant opportunities: cast a line in the numerous lakes or wander nature trials-especially around Lake Panasoffkee by biking or horseback-riding. Additionally, the Withlacoochee State Trail, one of Florida’s longest rail-trails, offers scenic experiences for biking, hiking and horseback riding. Wildwood also benefits from continued infrastructure and downtown revitalization projects, including improvements around US 301, new amenities, and enhanced pedestrian access. Plus, Brownwood Paddock Square-with its Old-Florida cattle-town vibe, farmers market, restaurants, boutiques and nightly live music-adds a vibrant touch for both residents and visitors.
